pretty in pink + give back | The Children’s Fund

Hey guys! How was the weekend? We had a relatively low key weekend spent outdoors, hitting up a rad new urban park and a BBQ’ing in the backyard. Bret an I also went to a gala on Saturday night that our good friends chaired. The Children’s Fund, one of the most impressive volunteer run non-profits I’ve ever come into contact with raises millions for children’s charities in Houston. If you live here, get involved! It’s amazing. If you aren’t a Houstonian and you’re looking for a new endeavor, start something like this in your city. The non-profit’s business model is genius. Members of The Children’s Fund are required to raise a certain amount of money per year plus help put on the annual gala that brings in 100’s of thousands in a single night. Members serve a 5 year term, which means they commit to raising money for The Children’s Fund for the long term. Once a member rolls off, they remain totally connected because they’ve been so committed, thus continuing to donate every year. It’s genius! Kind of like a Junior League but for couples; a fun volunteer organization that you get to donate time to with your significat other and meet other couples who are committed to raising money for kids in need.  A hobby that gives back to the community, how awesome is that?! I’m continuously amazed by how philanthropic my city is.

Over the weekend I carried my laptop from my bedroom to the kitchen, my office and back and that was the extent of my computer time. Zero. So today is catch-up day and I’m also packing day for a quick trip to Ohio. I wanted to get this outfit up on the blog  ASAP because I received so many compliments on it when I posted it on Instagram stories the other day. Isn’t this top so pretty?! It’s the perfect color of pink and very flattering on. I tucked mine into culottes but it could be worn out with white denim too. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I love these Sophia Webster sandals. I’ve wanted a pair of Webster’s whimsical shoes for so long but couldn’t seem to find the right style. The low block heel is pretty perfect for all occasions. I wore these to the Children’s Fund gala with this dress but will most likely wear them more often dressed down with jeans or a denim skirt and a tee.

Pura Vida at Four Seasons Costa Rica

April 23, 2017

TPS_5831

Costa Rica, the “pura vida,” pure life, and that it is. Bret and I had the chance to sneak away to Four Seasons Costa Rica at  Peninsula Papagayo for some much needed R&R. I didn’t realize how easy it would be to get from Houston to Costa Rica, a 3 hour flight and a quick cab ride from the airport to the property. This trip is the perfect spot for a long weekend (US direct flights locations listed below), but if I had my kids in tow we would have stayed for a lot longer.

The resort sits atop the Papagayo Peninsula, one of the prettiest pieces of property I’ve seen, with a beach on both sides of the resort. The view from our canopy suite was an awesome mix of terrain, monkeys were actually hanging out in the trees just outside our window, and the ocean.  Four Seasons Papagayo is the place to be for eco-adventure–kayaking, repelling, hiking, paddle boarding, surfing, snorkeling, the list goes on. The excursions available through the resort kept the adventure seeker in Bret happy and the incredible spa and chill beach ambiance was perfection for me.

There’s truly something for everyone at Four Seasons Costa Rica, including our kids. The resort operates with kids in mind, from wagons full of beach toys, to stools in each of the restrooms (if you have a toddler you feel me on this perk!) to castle tents in the guest bedrooms, this place is kid heaven. I can’t wait to come back with my entire family later this year.

Costa Rica Travel Guide | Four Seasons Costa Rica at Papagayo

When to go | The best time to visit Costa Rica is from mid-December to April (the dry season)

Direct flights from | Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, Washington D.C., Boston, New York, Newark, Atlanta and Miami

What to pack | See this post for packing ideas

What to do | Right on the Four Seasons property you can golf, spa, paddle board, kayak and more. There so many activities right at your fingertips, you could stay for weeks and no day would look the same. Water sports, fishing, hiking, golf, day trips for surfing in Tamarindo, Costa Rica’s #1 surf camp, or the active volcano at Arenal, ATV rides, repelling, the list goes on.

Where to eat | The restaurants on the resort property were all so fabulous. We had a special chef’s table dinner at Cena Sociale with 7 course tasting including wine pairing. The food and wine were amazing, one of the best meals I’ve ever  had. Even cooler, was the experience. Our table was in the actual kitchen directly in front of the serving line, so we got to see the chef’s in action, very exciting!

Kid friendly | Yes! The resort is great for kids, including guest suites that will hold multiple families

Stroller friendly | The resort is very hilly, but there are concrete paths that are stroller friendly. The Four Seasons also provides a shuttle service to all guests, so it was easy to get around the resort via golf cart, as well.

I’m sort of obsessed with scarves. For someone who is cold natured but lives in a hot, humid city like Houston, it’s the perfect thing to keep on hand.

So, you can imagine my intrigue when the necktie trend took off. I got my first in San Francisco when I fell in love with a spin-off of the classic bandana pattern in a forest green, pale pink and marigold colorway.

Here’s even more reason to feel good about the neck-tie trend.

I wore a yellow denim jacket as a bright addition to my Easter ensemble. Apparently, it’s the it color of spring, so I can’t wait to stock up on more.

My best friend found herself in a similar spot I did last year where she felt her job was robbing her of a great deal of daily joy. I feel fortunate enough to have found my dream job, and she just did too! Fill out this questionnaire to guide you toward yours.

Some of my best writing stints have been spurred by traveling to new cities. As summer approaches, plan a trip and perhaps you’ll find that putting pen to paper never felt so natural.

The name Elisabeth Epperson, a blonde baking blogger, will be one to know sooner rather than later.

Have the best weekend. X

Everybody needs to dress that saves you when you have no time to think about what to wear. You know, the dress that never leaves the place that you throw all of your clothes on (for me it’s a chair in my bedroom) since you keep re-wearing it. Because well, it’s just that easy. And cute! I recently scored this spring’s version of my no-time-to-get-dressed- little black shirt dress at Monkee’s. I “accidentally” wore mine 4 times last week. I also love it with these sneakers.

Red Lace Dress

Hey y’all! How’s the week going? For some reason I keep trying to sit down at my computer to write (my favorite part of blogging!) and keep getting distracted or detoured. I wish my life could be more routine where I know each week exactly how much time I have for L. Avenue, but it’s just not the case with three very young kiddos. I’m embracing this fleeting time and hope you’ll stick around when I’m not posting as regularly as I’d like to. We’ve brought on some awesome contributors, including Molly who handles the Friday 5 and the fabulous Marcia who is going to pop in with recipes from time to time. And Lauren, my sale finding maven, who is an internet shopping guru. Annnnyway, let’s get to today’s outfit before baby Jack wakes from his nap!

We’re getting fancy over here today. I’ve been hanging onto this red dress for a little while now and can’t wait to wear it to a party this weekend. I love the cut of this dress, it covers me up in the right places and the back detail is really cool. Not to mention a high low front allows for maximum shoe visibility. Which calls for a cool shoe, right? A strappy white sandal makes this number daytime-approved but I’m going to dress it up with a silver statement sandal for a black tie gala this weekend. I found some rad earrings by JCM London at Tootsies to dress up my dress a little more too.

Friday Five | Happy Easter

April 14, 2017

My mom’s favorite holiday is Easter, and it’s hard to blame her. With winter behind us and the sunshiney seasons ahead, it seems like the best of 2017 is still to come. Here are some good reads while you unwind with your family over the long holiday weekend:

What’s Gaby Cooking x Williams Sonoma is a collaboration to end all collaborations. Needless to say, I can’t wait to try this line of salsas and the guac stater.

Really feelin’ the plant vibes in Alex Thomsens eclectic crib.

Snagged these DVF cocktail heels with both silver and gold to get me through the next round of cocktail parties.

For last minute Sunday brunch recipe ideas, Smart in the Kitchen has you covered.

I just started following House of Hackney and have fallen head over heels for their tropical wallpapers.

Happy Easter!

tunic talk

April 12, 2017

Lace, lace, lace, it’s all over the place! Tops, bombers, sweaters, shorts, skirts, you name it, it’s lace. I really haven’t met a lace I didn’t like case in point the most beautiful dress I ever did wear – my wedding dress was a lace bodice ballgown. This lace tunic (on sale!) can easily be paired with denim, these A&O shorts or even a darker leather number down the road for fall.

I love the detail and the navy blue color. Navy and white is a staple color combo for spring like black and white are for fall. It is a perfect statement piece that can really be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. I wore this exact outfit to a block party and then to dinner with my kids and I fully intend to jazz it up with a pump or a dressy sandal for a dinner date out.

One another note, did you notice my new Chloe bag? Ladies this bag is so hot it is only carried in at one store (for pre-order) and it is sold out at Chloe. I snagged this gem in Vegas. It’s definitely the IT bag for spring. Did I mention it is a crossbody bag, as well? So it can transition easily from day to night. And quite possibly my favorite feature, the bracelet handle. That’s one less accessory needed for the wrist, y’all!

Sunday Best | last minute Easter dress

April 11, 2017

Spring is flying by before my very eyes y’all! It really is true that the days seem long at times, but the months and years pass by so quickly. I can’t believe the Easter bunny will be visiting our house this Sunday. I love everything about Easter; the full blooms, bright pastels, egg hunts and most of all the extra time with family.

Easter always sneaks up on me, though and without fail I’m standing in my closet on Easter Sunday wondering what to wear to church and brunch. Thankfully with Shopbop and Amazon prime I can have my Sunday best delivered in two days, which is perfect for this procrastinator.
