Rodeo style

February 25, 2018

Shortly after moving to Houston at age 2-1, I picked up two phrases that quickly became part of my new Texan lexicon. “I wasn’t born here, just got here as quickly as I could.” And, “It’s not my first rodeo!” The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo was like Christmas for me in my 20’s, 3 weeks of large scale, over-the-top entertainment including a BBQ cook-off, carnival food, bull riders and performances from some of the best country music stars, musicians I’d listened to since childhood–George, Alan and Garth to name a few. You see, there were a lot of similarities from some of my favorite pastimes as a young kid that felt so familiar during rodeo season. I’m from a very small town and the fair, Saturday night square dances with cousins and 4-H (future farmers of America folks!) were on the list of favorite childhood memories.

Since having kids, my rodeo days have been sparse, so when asked by the Houston Chronicle  to contribute for a feature on rodeo attire I was all in! While this isn’t my first rodeo, I will say there is an art to dressing the part. I’m always impressed with how festive people get for rodeo, most women are dressed up and accessories are king–more is more, hats, turquoise earrings and necklaces, statement belts, and custom cowboy boot fabulousness. I’m typically a little more laid back, a jeans and boots kind of rodeo girl, but when Jubilee boutique showed me a fun embroidered skirt I gave it a whirl. I love how colorful today’s look is and wearin’ Willie isn’t so bad either.

trending | tie front pants

February 20, 2018

The tie front is trending y’all. I’m seeing the cutest shorts and pants subbing in belts for a fun little front tie and I’m loving it! Admittedly a skeptic to this trend at first glance, I ordered a budget friendly pair to give it a whirl and I’m now wearing these guys on the reg. I’m eyeing this pair of shorts for spring too but waiting patiently (for now) for a sale!

I snagged this A.L.C piece at the annual Tootsies-takes-off sale and I’m kind of in love with it. It’s a great top that can easily transition to spring with white skinnies, a sandal and a blush bag.

It’s actually a dress in real life but is a bit short on me, so I’ll likely wear it as a top. Could totally work as a dress for some though, depending on how tall you are or how short a length you’re willing to rock. My rule of thumb is, “How short will this be while holding a toddler (which often causes your top/dress to ride up!).” Regardless, I love this neutral gem.

springy stripes

February 14, 2018

I realize Feb. 14 may be jumping the gun on thinking spring. When my friend Morgan posted this dress on her website, Shopburu, I decided to make an exception and dive into spring at once. I love the bold stripe, this dress is boho meets flirty prepster and as soon as temps break 70 I’m rocking it on the reg. I think it could look super chic with slide loafers until sandal season is among us. I’m heading to Mexico in a few months and think it would also be a great beach cover-up that works from beach to dinner.

Check out some other new season favorites by A Piece Apart on Shopburu, including more of this fab stripe print!

OOTD | Denim skirt

February 14, 2018

Denim skirts have definitely made a comeback. They’ve been on the scene in previous seasons, but this is the first time Im seeing the trend everywhere and seeing different styles, cuts and wash. I think a denim skirt is an easy outfit for those Spring days ahead. It pairs perfectly with a sweater for those cool mornings and easily transitions to a tee shirt or button-down as it warms up. Really anything goes.

bold monochromatic

February 11, 2018

How was the weekend guys? Ours was pretty low key, which is exactly what I needed after a whirlwind week that included new house demo, putting the current casa up for sale (any takers?!), two sick kiddos and a trip to urgent care. We slept in until 7:30 am which was major and didn’t get out of pj’s until 4 pm today. It felt good.

I found this sweater a while back and have worn it a lot, mostly with denim. I love the size zip detail, it’s just a great piece. I wanted the matching skirt but it’s a big of a splurge so have been stalking it for when it does on sale and guess what, it’s 60% off! I love me some monochromatic dressing. I’ve worn this getup mostly with these slides but it’s fun with booties too!

Hope y’all have a happy Valentine’s Day week!

Love first.

February 8, 2018

I’m a lover of graphic tees…especially when their messages are happy ones. Just in time for the season of love, I’m spreading some tee shirt love on the reg–have worn this tee with everything from denim and a blazer to a skirt and sneakers {when it’s not freezing outside}. This look is also a great alternative to standard heart prints and red and pink for Valentine’s Day. Happy weekend, y’all!
